Federer defeated Del Potro for the eighth title in his native Basel

The winner of the 19 Grand Slam titles Roger Federer won the eighth tournament trophy in his hometown of Basel and a total of 95th of a single in his career. The 36-year-old Swiss won the Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro with 6: 7 (5), 6: 4, 6: 3. In this way, Federer was second only to the rankings for the most titles in the Open Era, leaving behind Ivan Lendle (94). Record holder Jimmy Connors with 109 titles.

With today`s triumph Federer approached 1460 points from his big rival over the years Rafael Nadal in the world rankings. World No. 1 is 10465 points, and on Monday Federer will be 9005 in second place.




For Federer this was the 13th final in Basel in his career and the seventh title in 2017, when the veteran won 2 Grand Slam titles - the Australian Open (fifth time) and Wimbledon (for a record eighth).



Federer already has 18 wins against Del Potro, who has 6 defeats. Interestingly, two of t hese victories Argentine recorded at the finals in Basel (2012, 2013).




The meeting today began with a breakthrough in the Federer circuit but was back from the 4th Del Potto in the second game. At the end of the first set, this scenario was repeated. Federer broke for 5: 4 and seemed very close to winning the first part, but the US Open champion in 2009 returned the 5: 5 break, then beat the tiebreak 7: 5, turning 0: 3 to6: 3 points.
